Natural and tourist richness of the Ardèche department (07) in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Ardèche river and its famous gorges constitute a real tourist program not to be missed.
If you and your family love nature, natural areas, water activities and hiking, the descent of the Ardèche gorges is the ideal leisure activity for you for a successful holiday.
Of course, the canyons dug in the limestone rock by the course of the river can be discovered on foot, by mountain bike, or by car thanks to the D290 which overlooks it; but the descent by canoe or kayak is an unforgettable adventure. This life-size experience is accessible to everyone.
Discovering the gorges and its breathtaking landscapes from the inside and all along the route, there is nothing more immersive. Coming on holiday in the gorges also means enjoying swimming as well as discovering medieval villages, regional heritage such as the nature reserve of the gorges, its scrubland and the famous caves of Chauvet.
APRIL – OCTOBER… BEST TIME TO DESCEND THE ARDECHE
The best descents in the Ardèche
With 120 kilometers long, the Ardèche offers a wide choice of routes and descents to admire the fauna and flora of the department. It is you who decide according to your level and your desires of the course to go down.
- The mini descent, 8 km . Ideal for families with children or beginners. You can start by learning about the mini-descent of 8 kilometers from the Salavas bridge to La Rouvière. Before your descent, it is possible to spend a night at the base located at the campsite. You can also choose to spend several nights to make the most of your stay in the gorges! To reach the starting point of the mini-descent, located at the pier of the camp, you take the mini bus which leaves every 1/2 hour after equipment and briefing, and there you start your mini-descent near about 10 minutes from route. This is a relatively easy course dotted with small rapids (Rapide des Branches, and Charlemagne among others), as well as the passage under the famous Pont d’Arc which is a natural arch. It is the water of the river which has infiltrated the limestone rock to gradually create through erosion this immense opening on the Gorges de l’Ardèche. You will finish the descent to Châmes without time constraints, on the camp beach indicated by the STOP 2 sign, after about 1h30 of canoeing excluding break time.
- The 13 km descent . Navigating the river becomes a little more fun with slides, rapids and slalom between the rocks of the river. The slides that constitute what are called toboggans represent a really fun entertainment and appreciated by young and old. The start is in Sampzon with an arrival at STOP 2, 400m after the arc bridge on the beach of the camp.
- The 24 km descent , from the beach of the Rouvière campsite to the Sauze landing stage, allows you to explore the magnificent landscapes of the nature reserve by crossing the 13 small rapids which will spice up your adventure. This is a medium route, ideal for sports enthusiasts and lovers of nature and discovery. You will go back to the pier aboard our buses after a journey of about 5 hours excluding break time. In autonomy for the day, do not forget to plan your picnic, drink and sunscreen.
- The 32 km descent or the 37 km descent are on the other hand descents of 1, 2 or 3 days. These are courses ideally intended for people wishing to disconnect by immersing themselves in the heart of nature with family or in a group. Departing from the Salavas pier for the 32 km and from Sampson for the 37 km, guaranteed wonder. These routes will allow you to pass under the famous Pont d’Arc, but also to cross all the rapids of the river. The thrills are there. You leave the base from 9 a.m. every hour and will arrive on the beach of Sauze, in Saint Martin d’Ardèche at the end of the afternoon between 3 and 5 p.m. day 1 or 2. The return to the camp is always done on board our shuttles.

At the time of your canoe rental at the Cabanon de la Rouvière , you benefit from the assistance of professional guides who will take care of explaining the course to you.
Before your boat, during the allocation of the equipment there is always a briefing during which you receive all the instructions, information and instructions necessary for the smooth running of the descent.
You will also be kept informed of the important points of each course. For school groups or summer camps, accompaniment on the river by monitors at the rate of 1 for 15 participants is compulsory for safety reasons.
